In a new capping ceremony given by the Valley of Atlanta, candidates from the latest class received their "Black Hats." Many of the new Masters of the Royal Secret were escorted by wives and family who would then cap them at the appropriate time. After the capping, Past Grand Master, Buster Horne, would then make it official by declaration.

This year, our programs will include officer drilling, MELD programs, Catechism Coaching, and, of course, fellowship. Our Chefs will include David Llewellyn, Steff Beasley, and our young, up and coming counselor / Green Egg guru, Jason Graham. Gate City Series - History of the Universe at Fernbank Planetarium!

Gate City's well acclaimed Series of Masonic education keeps up pace with a new installment at the Fernbank Science Center Planetarium. -Yours truly will have to go off script here by saying, "wow, that's way outside the box. Incredible!"

This event will be held on THURSDAY, DECEMBER 8TH at the Fernbank Science Center Planetarium (see link below for more information and address). Our very own Doug Hrabe will be giving us a brief overview of the history of the Universe and how its age was calculated. This will be followed by the Holiday Planetarium program called “Star of Wonder”.

We will serve dinner at the planetarium and it is open to all friends and family! If you plan to attend, please send an email to let us know you will be attending!

Worshipful Master Donald Hall has scheduled five Entered Apprentice Masons to be Passed to the Degree of Fellow Craft on Tuesday, November 22, 2011. These five candidates passed their EA Catechisms with flying colors under the tutelage of Zeithlin Waters and Alan Colussy. The degree will be conferred by Worshipful Brother Hall with lectures scheduled to be given by Randy Hazan and Beaux Pettys.

Our Lodge Chef, Steff - New Orleans Finest - Beasley, has concocted a menu worthy of the finest houses of the Garden District:

Five Raised by Torchlight at Autumnal Ritual in Masonic Cemetery:

Gate City Lodge No. 2 conferred the Master’s Degree on five candidates on October 22nd, 2011. The ceremonies were held in the Masonic section of Forrest Lawns Memorial Gardens just south of Atlanta. The paths were lit with lanterns, candles and torches. The East, West, South and Altar were constructed of White Georgia Marble.

There was no moon that night and the weather had just started to turn cold. The Brethren and candidates toughed the conditions for what all agreed was a most memorable occasion.

To see the names of brethren who had gone before prior to the sun going down made the affair all the more touching. Many of these Brethren were buried next to their wives, daughters and sons: Lodge was held that night, and this was the first time that they were present at lodge with their fathers and husbands.

July 11, 1924 – October 28, 2011

Jeff Wilson Hodges, Jr. was born July11,1924, at Fairland, "Heart of Texas Hill Country" to Farm Carolyn Edwards and Jeff Wilson Hodges. Early schooling was in the same "one-room school building" his mother attended. Still standing to this day, it is a State Historic site. Jeffs' father a "railroad station agent" was transferred to Giddings, TX. a few miles from where he was born, Jeff Jr. began school in the 4^th grade at Giddings, graduating in 1941. After graduation he enrolled at North Texas Agricultural College, in Arlington, Texas. "Pearl Harbor" happened that December. NTAC was a "junior version" of Texas A&M, "military." The years, 1942-43, cadets were called to active duty. My group in early '43 was called and assigned to Ft. Riley Kansas, a cavalry post. Basic training completed, several "Enlisted Reserve Corp members" were transferred to Air Cadet Testing Unit at Jefferson Barracks, MO. Testing completed, the group was sent to Western. Reserve University, Cleveland, 0H. for schooling, mostly math. Our physics professor was one "cool" instructor. His EOM: Iry Norden, He was the one responsible for the WW II "bombsite" that bears his name. The program was discontinued, plenty of pilots in the pipeline. A transfer to Ft. Monmouth, N. J., Hello Signal Corp. There, 33 were placed in a program. from which 30 were chosen. Six- 5- man teams were selected. Course completed and after two-weeks in Washington, D.C. at the Pentagon "Signal Center" we were dispatched via rail to San Francisco. Three teams sent to European theatre, three to the Pacific. My unit sailed from San Francisco. The "program" was "Radio Photo" (Facsimile anyone) After delivery of the "bomb" and surrender, service in Manila was "good". Successfully avoiding "occupation duty" in Japan" I was, with rank of Sgt. discharged from the 4026th Signal Photo Bn. at Ft. Bliss Texas, January 1946, six hundred plus miles from home.

MASONIC HISTORY

Jeff Wilson Hodges, Jr. on returning from service in January1946, petitioned J. D. Giddings Lodge No.280, Giddings, Texas and was raised a Master Mason on October 4, 1946. The EA degree & examination was held in May '46. The Fellow Craft exam, was taken in Onion Creek Lodge (located outside of Austin) in August. My coach was a "railroad man" and he belonged to that lodge. (He wanted me to stand the exam in his lodge). We both worked for the railroad in Austin, and would meet and "get it right". Texas work is slightly different from Georgia work, especially in the EA Degree.

In May 1947 I applied for and was given employment by Acme Newspictures, Inc. in Ft.. Worth, TX. Two years later, in May 1949, I was transferred to Atlanta, Georgia as Chief Engineer, Southern Division. Ten of the original 30 Signal Corp personnel were employed by UPI in the years following the end of hostilities in 1945. The job, and location did not always allow time for "Masonic activity". The transfer from J D. Giddings Lodge #280 to Atlanta's Gate City Lodge #.2 in 1970 was the real beginning of my Masonic journey.

MASONIC JOURNEY

Having a dimit from my Texas Lodge, I petitioned Gate City Lodge No. 2, Atlanta in 1970. Once accepted by Gate City, a petition for membership was made to the Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Atlanta, and afterwards Yaarab Shrine Temple. I was accepted and began work in both organizations, December 1970.

The following December 1971,1 was appointed to serve as Chaplain in the officer line of Gate City, No. 2. In the year 1978, while serving as Junior Warden, I suddenly found myself in the East. That election night, the Senior Warden declined to move to the Masters station. I was elected to serve Gate City No. 2 as Master for 1979. Several years later, in 1990, I again began serving Gate City Lodge No 2 as Secretary, from 1990-2004, and again in 2007.

The years in the 70's were busy ones. Having already joined the AASR, Valley of Atlanta, and Yaarab Shrine Temple, I found myself also among the "Ladies of the Eastern Star." Faith Chapter No 504 immediately "put us to work." We served in the East as Worthy Matron. & Patron in 1973. I am still a "card carrying" member.

Activity in the Scottish Rite and Shrine was not neglected. I became a member of the "Scottish Rite Guard", and as such, duties called for "parking-lot details" and "horse- show parking details" as well as a lot of "activity," in and about the Temple. This activity warranted advancement to Knight Commander Court of Honor in 1975. KCCH "red hats" that year were presented in Savannah, Ga. Before the "red hat," & during," I was the 'gofer' for WB Wm. Hutcheson, 33rd, who at the time was Director of Work for Scottish Rite Valley of Atlanta. As his assistant in those "Red Hat" days, I never thought I would be able to "walk in his shoes," when suddenly I found myself in his place as "Director of Work." Question? How does a "Red Hat" tell (instruct) a "White Hat" what to do -- when? The answer :is VERY CAREFULLY . That problem was solved in 1981...1 received my "White Hat "& the 33^rd degree in Tampa, Fl. I was Director of work until 1985 when events occurred, causing me to have to leave Atlanta for "Whitewater Duty" in Ducktown, TN. During the early years, l had been active in ritual work, taking parts in numerous degrees, such as 15^th, 20^th ; 21^st ; 30^th; and the 32^nd which I conferred for several years. (In those years we had an "army" of folks on stage for the 32^nd ) I have had the "honor & pleasure" of working with some of the "very best" ritualists that could be assembled. In 1984 I sat as "Venerable Master of the Lodge of Perfection", and did double duty in the York Rite as "High Priest" of Mt. Zion Chapter, RAM. On return from exile in Tennessee in 1990, I reclaimed my role as the "Chief Frank Judge" in the 30^th degree. He was a hanging Judge.

I received an opportunity to become part of the Ritual Cast of the 33^rd Degree Conferral Team. I served in the cast as Lt. Grand Commander, from "1993 until "2007."

I was a member of the Appalachian Mountain Scottish Rite Association, headquartered in Jasper, Ga. The "mountain associations" (of northern Georgia) were responsible for the 70 & 80's growth of membership in the Atlanta Valley, Georgia Scottish .Rite. Jasper was one of the early and most active of all the associations "scattered" throughout north Georgia- I served as the last President of the Association in its final year, 2003.

I have been a member of the "Scottish Rite Foundation of Georgia Inc." for over 20 years, having served as President in 2005. This foundation is composed of 33 members who are 33 degree masons hailing from all Valleys in the State of Georgia. All members serve at the pleasure of the SGIG. They are either "elected or appointed" by the Sovereign Grand Inspector General.

ROYAL ARCH

I was Exalted in Mt. Zion Chapter No.16, November 12, 1977. I progressed through the officers line, serving as High Priest in 1984. Received The Order of High Priesthood in 1984. In the year 2001, it was my pleasure and honor to serve as the Grand Sentinel for my good friend, William Douglas Miles, Grand High Priest, 2001- 2002.

COUNCIL

I was greeted in Jason Burr Council No.13 on November 12, 1977. Elected to the officers line in 1993, I proceed forward to the Illustrious Masters chair in 1998. I received the order of Silver Trowel in 1998 and in the same year, Thrice Illustrious Master. I was chosen ONE of the “22 MEN from GEBAL”_i the award given that year by Illustrious Grand Master Ed Jennings.

KNIGHTS TEMPLAR

I received the Commandery orders, November 17, 1990, being Knighted by Right Eminent Grand Commander Ted Holt Hendon. (Atlanta #9) My first meeting in Atlanta #9, I was given the Black Ritual and assigned task of learning the "Order of the Red Cross" by Commander of Atlanta #9, Sir Knight Eugene Lowery. After a short time (next year,1992) I started in the officers line, and the next year I was called to confer the Order of Red Cross. I was elected Commander of Atlanta #9 in 1999. My installing officer was Shepherd G. Pryor, PGC and a legend in Atlanta #9, In 2000 I placed my name for consideration to serve in the Grand Commandery line. I was elected Warder after "many" ballots (7). I am presently serving as REG Commander, 2008-9. In 2002 I received the Grand Commanders Award (Green) from Sir Knight Earl D. Harris, then Grand Commander. In this same year several of us took "Knight Crusaders of the Cross" orders in Mobile, at ALABAMA 'S Grand Conclave in 2002.

RED CROSS OF CONSTANTINE

In 1990 I was elected to membership in St. Ambrose Conclave, Red Cross of Constantine. I was initiated in 1991 and progressed through the officer line, becoming Puissant Sovereign in 2006. At the Grand Imperial Conclave held in Salt Lake City, in 2005 I received an unexpected "appointment" to the grand line station of Grand Herald of the United Grand Imperial Council, Red Cross of Constantine. The incoming Sovereign for the Supreme Council, Charles R. Baddour making the appointment. It was my pleasure to serve in that station for one year. In the year 2006 I planned and organized a well-attended Southeastern Regional Assembly held in Atlanta.

GA CHIP Event at Scottish Highland Games a Success:

Gate City Lodge No. 2's members have held three GA CHIP's events this year and processed four hundred children. For the second year in a row, Gate City has been at the Scottish Highland Games at Stone Mountain. This years weather was beautiful.

Alan Colussy aided our efforts by having his birds on display to keep children occupied while there siblings were getting their turns for CHIP ID kits. GCII Fellowcraft, Jason Graham, The head of Children's activities for the Highland Games, lent us a bubble machine as well.

No rest for the Worshipful. Donald Hall, front and center for the lion's share of both days, handled the dental impressions, organized the brethren, and made sure things went smoothly.

Bill Wallace makes it to High Camp on Mt. Rainier:

Mt. Rainier is 14,430 feet above sea level and is a very challenging mountain to climb. Bill's group made it to high camp but decided that attempting to achieve the summit was too dangerous based on the loose snowpack and the potential for avalanche. Just the week before, 12 climbers were swept away due to avalanche. There was one fatality as a result and the climber is still buried on the mountain.

The climb involved climbing to Muir base camp on an average 45 degree slope for 5 hours with a 50 lb pack. Definitely a challenge that requires excellent physical and mental conditioning. Only about 40% of attempts result in a successful summit.

With the summer months here, GCII goes on a 2-4-2 schedule: 2nd Tuesday June, 4th Tuesday July and 2nd Tuesday in August. The next time we will meet for a regular communication is July 27, 2010. Our communication in August will be on the 10th.

Keep in mind, with nine Entered Apprentices in progress, a couple of communications for the conferral of the Fellowcraft Degree are imminent. Worshipful Master Donald Hall has some other events planned which will be announced in the coming days. We'll keep you posted.

Colonel Steel: Patriotism Without Action Is Counterfeit: Photos By Ross Laver:

On June 8. 2010, Gate City welcomed Colonel Michael Steele to speak on the sacrifices of the American Soldier. Colonel Steele became legendary through the movie and book, Black Hawk Down. A fame and legend he and freely and outwardly shuns.

An excited group began to gather around 6PM for the presentation. By Seven Thirty, we counted over ninety guests. Beaux Pettys introduced Colonel Steel to the gathering.

Colonel Steele's presence was commanding. Through a computer projector with images behind him, he introduced us to several of the men with whom he'd had the honor of serving. He told us of their backgrounds and accomplishments and would tell us in what part of the country they were. The screen would then flash to where those brave men currently resided only to reveal their respective tombstones. These were bright men with great futures who loved their country - and died for freedom.

Colonel Steele showed us an American Flag, which was given him, that was pulled from the rubble of the World Trade center on 9/11. He flew the same flag over bases across Afghanistan and Iraq. "Freedom is paid for with blood," He said. "I hope that we will never again nonchalantly walk by our flag."

Much of what Colonel Steele imparted to us will not be reprinted or described here. Such were his observations, his experiences, and his memories - these could never really be conveyed, with any justice done to them, except by Colonel Steele. The sincerity and love with which he spoke about our Country, our freedom and our soldiers left us awestruck and renewed.

What could anyone do but give him the standing ovation which he deserved.

In addition to an autographed copy of Mike Karpovage's new novel, A Crown Of Serpents, Worshipful Master Donald Hall presents Colonel Steele with a tokien of our appreciation.

Gate City Annual Retreat Scheduled for the Weekend of December 3 - 5:

The Brethren of Gate City Lodge No. 2 have decided on a date for the Sixth Annual Retreat. Breaking with the usual scheduling of our retreat for the weekend before the annual communication, it was decided that the second Tuesday came too late in December this year. The idea for the change was given by Worshipful Brother David Johnston and approved by Worshipful Master Donald Hall.

Our Retreat focuses on Officer Proficiency, Catechisms, planning and Fellowship. Over thirty brethren are reasonably expected over the weekend. The retreat is held in Big Canoe at a large house which features amenities such as two kitchens, heated pool, large outside deck with a view and a home theatre which makes for a great Lodge Hall for practice.

The first retreat was held in 2005 by the incoming Master, Beaux Pettys. The attendees were: Beaux Pettys, Don Sawyer, Doug Hrabe, Michael Bjelajac, David Johnston and Tom Lawrence. Joe Brooks and Jeff Hodges came by that weekend as well to offer input and support.

Colonel Michael D. Steele, United States Army, former Company Commander in the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment during the Somalia mission Operation Gothic Serpent, which resulted in the book and movie Black Hawk Down, will be at Gate City Lodge No. 2 on June 8, 2010. Colonel Steele will talk about the sacrifice of the American Soldier throughout our Country's history.

Dinner is at 6:30PM, is $7, and will be hamburgers and hot dogs. The presentation will begin at 7:30PM. No media (cameras or recording devices) of any kind will be allowed.

Rest in Peace Brother Charles L. Windham

Charlie Windham was raised in Gate City Lodge five years ago at the age of sixty four. He attended when he could and endeared himself to all who had a chance to know him. He was particularly mentioned in the Northeast Corner Lecture at Tuesday's Initiation.

We look upon, and lament over, the vessel that enshrined the essence - knowing he's no longer contained therein. His liberated spirit danced away from the ravages of the broken column the moment he was freed. The empty vessel, left on these shores, is a reminder of the crossing which we will all make soon enough.

Rest in Peace Charlie.

WINDHAM, Charles, Jr. Charles Leroy Windham Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia on July 28, 1941 to Charles and Sara Windham. He spent his youth in Morningside and graduated from Grady High School in 1959 where he captained the football team and was president of his senior class. He received his BS degree in Industrial Management from Georgia Tech in 1963. At Tech, he was a member of the football team and was president of Sigma Chi fraternity. Charles served his country as a Lt. Jr. Grade in the US Navy. His business career was in chemical sales. He was a member of the Masonic Temple in Atlanta. Charles died on May 22, 2010 of natural causes. He is survived by his wife Judy, his children Taylor and Lane, son-in-law Joseph Uehlein, granddaughter Anna Grace, and sisters Sara Virginia Knight (Walter) of Arlington, VA and Mary Louise Broach (John) of Greenville, SC. A memorial service is planned for Thursday, June 3 at 2 pm at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 2461 Peachtree Rd. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church or Buckhead Christian Ministries (BCM).

With last night's class of initiations complete, Gate City has eight Entered Apprentices: 7 by degree, 1 as a courtesy conferral.

Tuesday's Ceremony was conferred by Beaux Pettys WM, David LLewelyn SW, Nick Hayes JW, Donald Hall SD, Victor Marshal JD, Zeithlin Waters SS, BJ Crapps JS, and conducted by John Guest and Minh Van. Several members and guests were on hand to watch the shimmering ritual performed in Gate City's own inimitable fashion. The second section was handled by David Johnston, Donald Hall and Beaux Pettys.

David Johnston gave the Bible, Apron and Charity lectures. Being a Lodge full of attorneys, the second section mirrored a session of English Parliament. David Johnston handled well the opposing viewpoints as he presided over the second section. The initiation was finished off by Beaux Pettys in the Northeast Corner.

Gate City's method of work can best be described as Gothic. The overall intensity is solely for the benefit of the candidate. The goal of such work is to deliver, with impact, the meaning and significance of the craft and to meet or exceed the most prevalent image of the fraternity to which candidates may be exposed prior to initiation.

Colonel Michael D. Steele, United States Army, former Company Commander in the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment during the Somalia mission Operation Gothic Serpent, which resulted in the book and movie Black Hawk Down, will be at Gate City Lodge No. 2 on June 8, 2010. The True Secret Word of a Master Mason

At the beginning of his Masonic career each candidate for initiation is instructed that “Freemasonry is a beautiful system of morality, veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols. The design of the Masonic Institution is to make its members wiser, better and consequently happier . . . .” To that end we are reminded by symbols to circumscribe our desires and to keep our passions within due bounds. Our Lodges are universally opened with a prayer. In many jurisdictions we beseech the Grand Architect of the Universe, whom each of us worships privately in his own way, to “[g]rant that the sublime principles of Freemasonry may so subdue every discordant passion within us, so harmonize and enrich our hearts with Thine own love and goodness, that the Lodge at this time may humbly reflect that order and beauty which reign forever before Thy throne.”

Our degrees teach and constantly remind us of our duties to ourselves and our fellow creatures. In the Entered Apprentice Degree we are taught to extend true charity to all. Not just material charity, but also that more noble charity of mind and spirit that inspires us to help every other human being who is in need. We are reminded to act with Temperance, Fortitude, Prudence, and Justice. The last of these cardinal virtues – Justice – “enables us to render to every man his just due without distinction.” The Fellowcraft Degree instructs us to engage ourselves in the pursuit of knowledge, not just at passing, but forever. In particular it encourages us to study the classical liberal arts and sciences, which lead to a liberal and enlightened mind. That mind is free from the dross of all prejudices, national, cultural, ethnic, racial, and religious. It could hardly be otherwise, for we are also taught that Masonry is universal, extending its benevolence throughout the entire terrestrial globe. By so freeing our hearts and consciences from all prejudices we are taught that we will earn, not be given, wages of spiritual nourishment, refreshment, and joy. The Sublime Degree of Master Mason goes even further. It is called “sublime,” that is “elevated in thought,” “inspiring awe,” because it teaches us of our further duties to each other and, indeed, to all humankind. In that degree we undertake certain serious and solemn obligations to each other as brothers. But these duties are not exclusive to us. The true, mature Mason understands that they apply to all persons of every kind in every situation. We bind ourselves to each other only as a starting point, a point from which the real Mason travels onward.

The Master’s degree, however, comes with a warning. That warning is conveyed in the most dramatic fashion. It is that we must ever guard against the worst ruffians of our natures and oppose them, even to death, if we hope to be placed as living stones in that “House not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.” We must act. We may not just hope.

The Master’s degree also informs us that the secret word of a Master Mason has been lost to us through the perfidy of our unseemly desires and passions – the ruffians that confront us daily and to which we so often succumb. It is our duty to seek out that secret word, that hidden meaning, even though it will always remain ineffable and inexplicable to others. It is our individual duty to become worthy of receiving it by subduing our passions and controlling our desires. Only then may we hope to obtain and understand it – the true meaning of Freemasonry – within our hearts and soul.

He who would receive the true secret word of a Master Mason must come to understand that it can only be learned it by the constant practice of the virtues inculcated by our degrees. We all will one day stand naked and defenseless before the Grand Architect of the Universe. Before that Throne there will be no distinctions of nationality, class, or race. All those artificial distinctions, meaningful only to sinful man, will be worthless to us. If we would finally receive the true secret word, the word that has been lost, we must constantly resist the ruffians of our natures that keep us from it. We must not sow discord. We must resist the temptation to treat only those who look and think like ourselves as our neighbors and brothers.

He who allows the three ruffians of religious bigotry and intolerance, ethnic and cultural blindness, and racial animosity and hatred to dominate his thoughts and control his actions will no more discover the true secret word of a Master Mason, no matter how hard he cries “Give it to me!!”, than did those ruffians whose evil deed bloodied the ground at the building of King Solomon’s Temple. This is the great teaching of the Third Degree. It is of greater importance than any haled word or sign. And it is the hardest one for most of us to grasp. But grasp it we must if we are ever to become true Master Masons.

One does not become a Master merely by being raised. Rather one becomes a Master by truly embracing and living that which our ceremonies teach. In the end it is up to each of us to become a Master Mason in spirit as well as in body. Only then will one be worthy to receive the true secret word of a Master Mason. Whether one ever reaches that goal, whether one ever becomes worthy to be placed as a living stone in that celestial Temple, will be known only to him and to our Infinite Creator when he finally stands before Him. Therefore it is well that we constantly strive to make smooth our rough natures by embracing and following the great lessons of Freemasonry – the lessons taught by symbols, types, and allegories in the Three Degrees - in all our thoughts and actions inside the Lodge, as well as in the profane world.

Another Great Evening: Five Initiated

Some of The Brethren of Gate City meet up after Tuesdays Initiation at a local restaurant.

Five Men were initiated on Tuesday, April 27, 2010. The three hour marathon was described by Joe Brooks, a Freemason for over fifty years, as the best work he's seen in Georgia. "It wasn't due to the intensity of the conferral or any sort of drama during the degree, but the emotional quality which was expressed in the work was just beautiful."

Fifty Brethren were on hand to see the degree. Beaux Pettys, Mike Bjelajac, David Johnston, Dan Genson, Joe Upshaw, Nick Hayes, Victor Marhsall and Bj Crapps performed the first section. David Dodd, David Llewellyn, David Herman, John Guest and Shane Moore conducted. The material points in the second section of the degree were unmistakably delivered by David Johnston, Beaux Pettys and Victor Marshall.

Two more candidates will be initiated at an upcoming called communication - stay tuned.

Gate City Lodge No. 2 raised four men to the sublime degree on Tuesday, April 12, 2010. The Missile Defense Contractor, Falconer, Commercial Contract Salesman, and Post Doctoral Reaserchist at Georgia Tech turned in exemplorary Fellowcraft examinations in open Lodge. Their coach, Zeithlin Waters, was well pleased with their performance. The Lodge was incredibly well pleased with Zeithlin's great coaching as well.

The Degree was delivered by Beaux Pettys, David Johnston, Nick Hayes, Mike Bjelajac, Victor Marshall, Zeithlin Waters, and Bj Crapps. The second section was given by David Johnston, Jeff Hodges, Joe Brooks, Tom Lawrence, Beaux Pettys and David Llewellyn. Both sections were given in excellent fashion with all of the mystic attributes in tact.

Eighty Five Attend Our Falconry Presentation:

Falconry: Ancient and Modern Usages was held on Tuesday, March 9, 2010. Eighty Five total attendees were treated to a great presentation by Alan Colussy.

The night began with a rarity at GCII: fried chicken. During the meal, our guests kept inquiring as to the location of the birds, especially the children. That evening, our first guests in the Lodge Hall were Falcon / Hawk hybrids. As our attendees filed into the South Lodge of the Masonic Temple, a look of "oh" came over most of their faces as they realized that the birds were already perched and waiting for them. Worshipful Master Michael Bjelajac welcomed the gathering a turned the floor over to Alan Colussy. Alan spoke for nearly twenty five minutes on everything from the Mid East / Asian origins of the art of Falconry to it's modern usages. Realizing the wide interest in his subject and raptors, he kept a bird on one arm and the microphone in the other as he carefully visited each quadrant of the Lodge Room.
Both the birds and Alan exhibited an amazing amount of patience for all of the questions which came after his presentation - and there were many. Of course, how often does one get to see one of these birds up close. For an hour after the question and answer session concluded, Alan was in the cafeteria providing photo opportunities and answering more questions. The best part was having over twenty percent of our audience being under eight years old. While the adults wide eyed and curious, the children were amazed!

A Salute to Jeff Hodges Year As Grand Commander: Photos By Bob Tidwell:

At eighty three years old, most men are contemplating their past. At eighty three, Jeff Hodges became Grand Commander of the Knights Templar in Georgia. The office of Grand Commander entails administration, travel and more travel. Part of the reason for such a rigid travel schedule is to oversee state wide inspections. Another reason for such extensive travel is to regulate and administer the agenda of the brotherhood.

By all accounts, Jeff brought a sense of balance, stability, and leadership to the grand Commandery. He attended the majority of all inspections to see that they went according to grand encampment rules. During his year, he was instrumental in keeping the brotherhood of the knights Templar together. In the words of several Brethren interviewed for this article, "Jeff set a top notch example of what the Templar's represent."

Not only was there an agenda to implement and oversee, there was also a rather large charitable concern to navigate. The Knights Templar Eye Foundation is a charity which pays full or partial costs for operations of those in need of restorative sight procedures. Three to four thousand people a year receive assistance from this program, from cornea transplants to removal of cataracts.

One of Jeff's favorite moments of his year was laying the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The ceremony was performed in the exact manner in which a President of the United States would lay the wreath.

Jeff, towards the end of his year as Grand Commander, stands at the portrait of another Gate City II Giant, Joseph C. Greenfield, just outside the York Rite Room of the AMC.

Speaking of Giants, here's a pair of giant hams performing the Gimme Degree. Created by Gary Lemmons and Jeff Hodges (left to right), the Gimme Degree was founded after they'd both received just about every other honor from the appendant Masonic bodies - all of course for a fee. The secret sign of the Gimme Degree is to extend the crossed arms forward and wiggle the fingers. Gary and Jeff have been recognizing each other in this fashion for years. Recently, in a hotel lobby during check in, they flashed the Gimme Sign at each other from across the lobby. A visiting Brother from another jurisdiction saw the sign exchange and was perplexed, "What degree is this?" He asked Gary Lemmons. "The Gimme Degree," Gary replied. Gary then said to Jeff, "This Brother has never received the Gimme Degree." Jeff looked amazed at the visiting brother who was just then reaching in to his coat pocket for his check book. They didn't have the heart to take his money.

Fuzzy Dumplin'. Jeff's chapeau case is instantly recognizable by the knitted balls that are tied to the handle. They were knitted by Lady Chumley who was by Jeff's side for his entire ride as Grand Commander. A year of such high office is taxing for anyone but doubly so for a couple in their eighties. Well done, we love you and we are proud of you both!

What makes a lodge successful? Is it the energy behind the lodge, the people that create it? And, does that energy come at a cost? Is there a social capitol that is bartered in an invisible exchange that at times reflects a huge value where at others it challenges its very existence.

One such lodge happens to be a nexus for this very question, and has had a year to barter and trade on its own social capitol building a reputation amongst its community and amongst its peers. And this development has not been free of cost. Gate City Lodge in Atlanta Georgia has had a dynamic year, from a public forum on Catholicism and Masonry to a feature article about them in the New York Times. A Message From Worshipful Master Mike Bjelajac:
Dear Brethren & Friends,

It is with a sad heart that I inform you that at 3:00AM this morning, Bro. Victor Marshall's father (Mr. Rudolph Marshall 57), has passed away after battling complications stemming from Pneumonia.

Yesterday afternoon, Victor was notified that his father was being admitted to Upson Regional Medical Center's ICU after only being discharged a week earlier after being treated for Pneumonia. Victor advised that at the time of his admission, his father was unable to breathe on his own and his blood pressure had dropped below 50. As any good son would do, Victor immediately rushed to his father's side during his final hours as doctors fought to stabilize him.

I spoke with Victor this morning upon receiving his text message advising of his father's passing. As you can imagine, Victor is still processing all of this and he has advised that as of this moment neither he or his family is in need of anything other than your thoughts and prayers. I told Victor that if there are any needs or concerns that we may assist with, to please not hesitate to ask. I will keep everyone posted as further information becomes available regarding the funeral services for Mr. Rudolph Marshall.

Brethren, please keep Bro. Victor Marhall and his family in your thoughts and prayers when on bended knee.

Gate City II Receives National Recognition from Masonic Service Association of North America: The Mark Twain Masonic Awareness Award:

The winners of the coveted Mark Twain Masonic Awareness Award were announced at the conference of Grand Masters of North America on February 22, 2010 and Gate City II was among those named. After several unsuccessful bids for Lodge of the Year in our local district, GCII decided to try its hand at a national award. The Mark Twain Masonic Awareness Award was suggested by Joe Brooks and David Herman.

Established "to recognize lodges that have demonstrated exemplary work in constructing a positive Masonic identity within the lodge and for the local community," the Mark Twain Masonic Awareness Award has been presented to fewer than 100 lodges nationally in the four years since its inception. There are over 13,000 Masonic Lodges in the United States.

Measurement criteria include considering what the lodge did to heighten Masonic awareness in the community by communicating traditional Masonic values, as well as what the lodge did to provide camaraderie, build enthusiasm among members, and create an environment of mutual respect.

Last Night Four Entered Apprentice Brethren were passed to the degree of Fellowcraft. The degree was conferred in fine fashion by the Brethren of Gate City. The dimly lit lodge room flickered in the faint glow of candle light as formally clad shadows performed their solemn ritual. Such a presentation is meant for one thing: to indelibly impress upon the candidate the gravity of the order to which he aspires.

Prior to Passing, the candidates were led through a brilliant examination by their coach, Zeithlin Waters. Very well done.

The Gate City Series kicks off 2010 with an impressive first! Falconry: Ancient and Modern usages, by Alan Colussy, will be presented in the South Lodge of the Atlanta Masonic Temple. Alan will have five of his trained Falcon hybrids with him as he discusses this fascinating topic.

Alan's profession is Falconry. He has studied the art for over twenty years. Among the many topics regarding the subject will be origins, hunting with birds of prey, and modern applications such as airport contracts for diverting the flight patterns of nuisance birds such as pigeons.

If you've never seen one of these raptors up close, now is your chance. Alan will have extra gloves on hand as well as a camera and tripod if you would like to take a picture with one of these magnificent birds.

The Dinner starts at 6:30PM, is $7 and will be - what else - Fried Chicken, Mashed Potatoes and Collared Greens. Our presentation starts at 7:30PM.

On January 22nd aboard the 2010 Sixthman ~ Simpleman Cruise, Rickey Medlocke of Lynyrd Skynyrd organized a very special concert. Members of Lynyrd Skynyrd, .38 Special, Drivin n' Cryin, Kid Rock and Blackberry Smoke performed together in an effort to raise money for the Lana Turner Cancer Fund. These artists and fans with giant hearts enjoyed an hour long set filled with great songs by Blackfoot, Free, The Rolling Stones and More. At the beginning of the Show Sixthman's Big Boss Andy Levine talked about Lana and how much she meant to a lot of people on the boat as he made a more than generous contribution. Rickey Medlocke and Stacey Plunk followed suit with another as did the wonderful fans on the boat. The bucket was passed and a total of 15,000 dollars was generated for my daughter Lana's cancer fund. This was an amazing evening and I want to thank everyone involved.

Lana Turner, daughter of GCII's Brit Turner, diagnosed with Neuroblastoma:

Three and a half year old Lana Turner was diagnosed neuroblastoma on December 18th. She spent Christmas Day and New Years undergoing Chemotherapy at Scottish Rite hospital in Atlanta. The cancer was in 97% of her bone marrow. She also had two tumors in her lungs. After two rounds of Chemotherapy, the marrow has shown up negative for cancer cells. She still has to have two bone marrow transplants. After a couple of more rounds of chemotherapy treatments, the surgeons will perform an MRI to check the tumors in her lungs. If the tumors shrink, they will operate to remove them.

Over the last month and a half, Lana and her parents have received an overwhelming amount of support from friends and family. Brit wishes to thank everyone for all of their kindness and asks that we keep Lana in our prayers. "She is a fighter," Brit said, "I just want to see her grow up."

In my experience, the typical Tyler is an older Brother - most often grandfatherly in demeanor and transparent in motive. Usually opinionated yet well meaning, the stereotypical Tyler is a favorite in the Lodge. The "Old Tyler" articles seem to resonate our affinity for the office and whimsically profiles the gentleman which usually fills that station.

Our new Tyler, David Herman, fulfills all of the above listed precepts save one - he's in his forties. With less than a year in Gate City and sixteen in Freemasonry, David has held many stations: DDGM, Meld Committee, District Line, Director of Work and the East.

We are honored to have such a well seasoned, yet younger, man of the Craft as our Tyler. It doesn't get any better than that.

John Holt Receives Knight's Templar Cross of Honor and Other Awards:

As most of us know, it has been a year of ups and downs for Worshipful Brother John Holt. While he's endured a two month rehabilitation after a massive blood clot was found in his left hip, he was also given the Knight's Templar Cross of Honor. He has recently been appointed the State Chairman for the Knight's Templar Eye Foundation. Palestine Lodge No. 486 honored John last week with a dinner in his honor and and award for Mason of the Year in their Lodge.

John will be getting rides to Lodge for the next few months until his leg is rehabilitated. He can move around, only to an extent, and has to use a walker to do so. But as all of us know, even though he can barely walk, he stands tall on principles.

December 8, 2009: Annual Communication

The Annual Communication of Gate City Lodge No. 2 was held on December 8, 2009. Fresh off of our Annual Retreat, The Officer's line executed a near perfect Opening and Closing with all of the precision that we have come to expect.

2009 was an exemplary year for Gate City II: Four hundred attended the six Religion and Culture installments, two Chips events, a huge lodge retreat, great fellowship, nine new Brethren since February. While all of GCII were pleased with the results of 2009...We are looking forward.

Forward began at the Annual Communication.

Our Senior Warden, William Wallace, was unable to move to the East. Wallace has been on five continents this year and expects to be traveling more in 2010. William Wallace removed himself from consideration in July of 2009 with the understanding and well wishes of his Brethren.

Mike Bjelajac was unanimously re elected to the East. As previously stated, with the exodus from consideration of William Wallace, the best thing which all could figure was to let the Officer's Line move up as normal and keep Worshipful Master Bjelajac (Pictured Left at the Altar) in the East for another year so as to let the Line mature. We were all very happy that he chose to lead Gate City II for another term.

With 110 years combined of Masonic experience, the pair of Texans (as they so like to point out)gave us all a lesson in their dignified approach and proficiency of the work. We are continually made proud by Brothers Jeff Hodges and Joe Brooks.

Senior Warden, Donald Hall, forefront, is already planning for next year. Brother Hall's responsibilities are greatly increased this year by office, choice and directive of the Worshipful Master. Donald will be the XO in every sense.

2009 Retreat A BIG Success!!!

The Fifth Annual Gate City Lodge No. 2 Retreat was a wild success. Twenty Seven Brethren attended the two day event which featured a great combination of work and fellowship. GCII welcomed several guests from Lodges as far away as Peru and New York to brethren around Atlanta including Chamblee, Sandy Springs and Palestine.

The six thousand square foot house was just big enough to accommodate every thing that was going on - and there was a lot! Our Entered Apprentice Brethren worked well into their Catechisms. Doug Hrabe and Tom Lawrence were busy with Lodge administration. The officers drilled repeatedly on the opening and closing ritual. David Llewellyn cooked for what seemed to be the entire time. Officers from Chamblee Lodge were busy planning out their upcoming year.

The evenings were devoted to fellowship and unstructured time. Whether enjoying the heated pool, hot tub, pool table or watching football, everyone was relaxing and enjoying himself in the company of his Brethren.

One of the attendees, a brother, raised six years ago, who has just affiliated with GCII in the last six months, commented, "This is one of the things that I thought Freemasonry was supposed to be doing when I joined the craft." So did we - so we did.

Our retreat house featured four large fireplaces.

Never one to leave his Raptors home, EA Alan Colussy brought his five Falcons along.

Alan stopped by the Airport on his way to the retreat to pick up his latest bird - an owl. Nothing stops twenty Brethren from talking quicker than the introduction of a live owl into the room. Everyone was amazed to see the raptor up close. Alan gave pointers as well as talked about Falconry, which also happens to be his occupation.

Atlanta Masonic Center, York Rite Room: With David Herman sitting in the East for the first section of the Entered Apprentice Degree, the Brethren of Gate City II delivered an impressive Initiation for four candidates. Rick King, Shane Moore, Alan Colussy, and Giorgio Calanni were the recipients of the excellent conferral which was given at a called communication on Tuesday, December 1, 2009. The two David's were stellar. David Herman conferred the degree with excellent precision. David Johnston masterfully delivered the Charity and Apron lectures as well as the fabled second section. Beaux Pettys turned in the Northeast Corner Lecture with what some felt was his best yet. Mike Bjelajac, Zeithlin Waters, David Llewellyn, Victor Marshall, Minh Van were all great in their roles - our candidates received a proper initiation.

This was the third degree given in as many weeks. The Brethren of GCII have really been working. The Fellowcraft and Master's degrees are expected in January and February respectively.

Director of Work Role to Become a Committee Role:

GCII will have three Directors of Work next year. With a class of four starting on Tuesday and another class of the same size starting shortly thereafter, Beaux Pettys has recommended an expansion of the Director of Work role to a committee.

The Committee will feature David Herman, Zeithlin Waters & Beaux Pettys. The Committee will split the duties of the traditional role and offer greater individual time to officers, Brethren and candidates in ritual, catechism work and lectures.

Last night's communication featured the raising of three to the Sublime Degree. Several guests were there to witness the event from Chamblee, Fulton, Atlanta - Peachtree, Masters and Justice Lodge of Lima, Peru.

The candidates received their degrees in the warmly illuminated South Lodge. All of the Brethren participating did a great job in the Raising. However, last night's standout was Zeithlin Waters, Catechism Coach, who has led two excellent proficiency examinations in just two weeks. Great job!

Our Annual Lodge Retreat is fast approaching. We have capped the amount of attendees at 25. With nine officers training, nine candidates learning, three coaches and two cooks, there are only two spots left. First come, first served.

GCII CHIPS: Cold and Rainy Staurday at the Highland games followed by cold and sunny Sunday:

Gate City II showed their meddle by sticking out a cold, wet Saturday at the Stone Mountain Highland Games. The only thing warm in our booth was the crock pot for the dental impressions. During the weekend, over thirty volunteers showed up to lend a hand but with the bad weather came poor game attendance. Between Saturday and Sunday, seventy children received CHIPS processing. A truly worthy cause.

The surroundings of bagpipe bands, Scottish culture, great food and good fellowship made the cold bearable. Huge thanks and praises go to June and Ross Laver for all of their support and devotion to this great program.

We were asked back for next year, October 16 - 17, 2010, and have accepted. The promoters have promised better weather.

185 Show Up To Roast Leonard Buffington

One hundred and eighty five show up to roast incoming Grand Master Leonard "pork chop" Buffington. The Atlanta masonic Center was packed on Friday, October 16, 2009, as well wishers squeezed into the dining hall to watch a parade of dignitaries, friends and relatives as they fired off their best jokes, props and anecdotes. Jeremy Conlon, pictured in character, organized the roast as a means of raising money for The Grand Master's Traveling Fund for next year. By all accounts, Jeremy's routine was hilarious. Judging from his picture (left), his delivery was probably like that of a strange hybrid of Rod Serling and Johnny Carson. We expected nothing less.

Tuesday, October 13, 2009: The Haggis Was Addressed...and Consumed!

Beaux Pettys welcomed the gathering of sixty guests. He summed a paper, which he'd written, about Burns' importance to the Scottish People with the following, "Perhaps it is best to impart that, in the eighteenth century, Prometheus spoke with a Scottish Brogue. He carried a torch comprised of wood from the felled trees of the Highland clearances. In lieu of a lost kingdom, a pitch soaked rag was crowned atop his torch and Robert Burns lit the match." He hit the gavel three times and the entourage marched in behind the bagpipes.

The gathering stood up as the Bagpiper, swordsmen, and addresser marched solemnly to the east. The Haggis was placed in front of the addresser and he began the recital of Robert Burns'Address To A Haggis. His Scottish dialect was thick, literally unintelligible and an utter delight to hear. He stabbed The Haggis with a dagger several times and then wielded said dagger in the air. When finished, he paid the piper. Typically, one pays the piper with a dram of good Scotch Whiskey but, in this instance, apple juice had to suffice.

The pipes began and the entourage left the lodge room. Our gathering followed suit to the dining hall. It's hard to imagine wanting to sample sheep hearts, intestine and other unsavory bits but when beckoned by Scotsmen, clad in kilts, some people will try anything. Our guests enjoyed a heaping spoonful on taddies and Haggis while listening to another couple of tunes on the pipes and a couple of Burns' poems. Gate City would like to thank the following:

One For The Scotts: The Battle of Balaklava: The Thin Red Line: Octobber 25th, 1854:

With all of the talk in the last entry of St Crispens Day being on October 25th, and falling on the heels of our Address to the Haggis and our Georgia Chips event at the Stone Mountain Highland Games, I am remiss in not mentioning The Thin Red Line. One for our Scotsmen. 'Er ye goo lads!

The Russian cavalry force of 2,500 rode down the road to Balaklava. It was early morning and the sole force that lay between the oncoming cavalry and the disorganized and vulnerable British camp was the 93rd Regiment.

Campbell is said to have told his men, "There is no retreat from here, men. You must die where you stand." Sir Colin's aide John Scott is said to have replied, "Aye, Sir Colin. If needs be, we'll do that." (Campbell's relationship with his men was almost family-like.) Campbell formed the 93rd into a line two deep — the "thin red line". Convention dictated that the line should be four deep, however Campbell, a grizzled veteran of 41 years military service, had such a low opinion of the Russian cavalry that he did not bother to form four lines, let alone a square, but met the charge head on with the 2-deep firing line.[citation needed] Contrary to popular belief, the 93rd discharged three volleys, at 800, 500 and 350 yards, and not one at point-blank (as at Minden in 1759). However, despite the casualties inflicted, the Hussars and Cossacks would undoubtedly have overrun the British line; it was good fortune that saved them, as the Russian commander, seeing so thin a line of British infantry, concluded that this was a diversion and that there was a much stronger force behind the 93rd, and ordered the cavalry to withdraw. At that, some of the Highlanders started forward for a counter-charge, but Sir Colin stopped them with a cry of "93rd, damn all that eagerness!".

The Times correspondent, William H. Russell, wrote that he could see nothing between the charging Russians and the British base of operations at Balaclava but the "thin red streak tipped with a line of steel" of the 93rd. Popularly condensed into "the thin red line", the phrase became a symbol for British sangfroid in battle.

The battle is represented in Robert Gibb's 1881 painting of the same name, which is displayed at the National War Museum in Edinburgh Castle. It is also commemorated in the assembly hall of Campbell's former school Glasgow High School, where there is a painting of the action hung in the grand position, a tribute to one of the school's two generals, the other being Sir John Moore who was dismembered by a cannonball during the Peninsular War.

No offense to the wonderful Scottish Brethren from last night's Burn's celebration, but the English victory at Agincourt, over a vastly superior French force, still ranks as one of the all time surprise routes in world history. What better way to commemorate St Crispen's Day, so closely identified with Agincourt, than with the immortal soliloquy from Shakespeare's Henry V:

What's he that wishes so?
My cousin Westmoreland? No, my fair cousin;
If we are mark'd to die, we are enow
To do our country loss; and if to live,
The fewer men, the greater share of honour.
God's will! I pray thee, wish not one man more.

Gate City Staple, Sanjay Mody, meets Lady Margaret Thatcher

GCII staple, when he's not in London, Sanjay Mody, recently had a chance to ham it up with Lady Margaret Thatcher. Sanjay calls Lady Margaret, "the greatest peace time Prime Minister we've ever had." Sanjay is a citizen of the United Kingdom and goes back and forth from London to Atlanta on a regular basis. He is a graduate of Emory University and is doing his internship in London. The soon to be Dr. Mody should be gracing us with his presence in the upcoming months. Well done chap!

Freemasonry is that universal Brotherhood which has endured the test of time for over 400 years and yet it is still, and will continue to be, on trial for the Ages. Understand that there will always be those out there who will believe us to be the blanket that threatens to envelop the world. They are studying us to find that one strand to pull that will eventually unravel the Masonic tapestry that they fear or despise. With that being said, what are we as Freemasons doing to set the record straight about this Craft of ours? How many members of this great Fraternity are actually taking the time to raise up their working tools in order to “build that temple within themselves”?

Outside of Virginia, there is a Masonic Lodge that is in the middle of a heated battle against what I consider “Indirect Racism”, for not only is bigotry subtly being practiced, it is also inappropriately being justified as one of the Ancient Landmarks of Freemasonry. Generally, the actions within the Jurisdiction of every Grand Lodge are their own. However, when charges are preferred upon a Worshipful Master and his Lodge because they raised a “non-white” man to the degree of Master Mason, using as justification for the charges the…”usurpation of the constitution, laws, ancient landmarks, customs and traditions of…Masons”—this challenges the very foundation and core of our “Ancient Landmarks & Customs of Freemasonry”. At that point, this spills beyond their Grand Jurisdiction and right onto the lap of every Brother who has ever been raised and is in good standing.

The Constitution of Masonry reports, “Whence it follows that all Masons are to be good men and true—men of honor and honesty, by whatever religious names or persuasions distinguished; always following that golden precept, of "doing unto all men as (upon a change of conditions) they would that all men should do unto them. “ Understanding this, we recognize the importance of both true virtues and a clear respect for our fellow man in as much as we would wish this reciprocated. Worldwide, we as Freemasons suffer hatreds and prejudices by those who from their uninformed and closed-minded disposition would destroy the character of our beloved Craft; that being said, why would we wish to direct this fate upon any other of the human race?
As Masons, we must keep a constant check of ourselves to be sure that we are living our lives in the manner that brings honor to the Craft. We are not Brothers so that we can save one another from minor infractions of the law, or to broker a better deal for ourselves in business, or even to save one another from our own foolishness or stupidity. We are Brothers because we hold each other to the highest of standards and we understand that the life we live in this world is a difficult but rewarding one. Bigotry and Freemasonry are polar opposites of each other and ardent adversaries when faced with one another and never should one be practiced with the other.

We are the Brotherhood of Man under the Fatherhood of God. In a time when morality is declining within our society, there are so few good and honorable men in this world that one can rely upon; it is a shameful thing that there are those who would deny themselves and others the opportunity to know the experience and soul of another human being just because of the shell that we are destined to wear in this imperfect world. But I guarantee you that when we lay down our working tools, my Brother’s ashlar will fit as perfectly as mine when placed in that house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.

As for that maligned Lodge mentioned above, all Masonic charges have been dropped. However, there is still a grassroots movement by other Lodges in their Grand Jurisdiction to petition to have the Charter of that Lodge removed as punishment for raising a Brother of “non-white” descent. But this is not only their burden; every Grand Jurisdiction faces this issue. Even in Virginia, Most Worshipful Jeffery E. Hodges wrote a letter with the following statement:

I personally believe this to mean that, in addition to the ban on organization linkages, Virginia Masonry should regard the qualities and virtues of a Freemason as incompatible with the immoral behavior affirmed by such groups. Brethren, we all have our own problems and challenges of life, but we need to keep working to chip away at our own rough ashlars to make them perfect. The imperfections of our individuality are acceptable only because we are still utilizing our working tools to that end to accomplish and overcome. To act in denial or to refuse to change or improve ourselves and accept a life of hate is truly against the Ancient Landmarks and Customs of Freemasonry, and we should always check ourselves and take a good look at the edifice that we are building within.

Brethren, there will always be someone willing to unravel this beautiful tapestry that we know as Freemasonry. Let us not help them find that strand, but more especially let us not allow one of our own to unravel that tapestry from the seams within. Let us remember to do good unto all; recommend it more especially to the household of the faithful.

I promise you Brethren, the Great Architect of the Universe will remember.

There is another letter being circulated throughout Georgia Freemasonry. This letter, however, is anonymous. The envelope has no return address and the contents are merely a list of names of Gate City II members with Grand Lodge Offices beside said names.

The names with offices are cut into neat little slips which may be fitted into a coat pocket - for the Mason on the go. Whether the motives were misdirected good intentions or a malicious effort to get names published, for whatever reason, is unknown. Eulogy For Gate City II's Theron Roye Locke by Audrey McAleer

On Saturday, September 19, 2009, Gate City II said good bye to T.R. Locke. The long line of family and friends who were on hand to honor and say farewell was moving. It was difficult to stay composed as loved ones passed by the open casket for one last view and a final word. GCII was on hand as pallbearers as well as ritualists for the Masonic Graveside Service. Three representatives from the DeKalb Masonic Memorial Club were also on hand, at graveside, to assist as Stewards and the Chaplain. David Herman delivered the ritual with pride for the fraternity, love for his deceased brother, and heartfelt sympathy for the wonderful family of T.R. Locke.

I cannot write the words well enough to convey what a true spirit to the craft has been lost by the passing of Brother Locke. Nor can I fully impart the extent to which Theron Roye Locke fully embodied the principles of Gate City Lodge No. 2. That being said, Mrs. Audrey McAleer has graciously allowed us to publish her eulogy for Theron Roye Locke.

Eulogy for Theron Roye (T.R.) Locke

For those of you who don’t know me, I’m one of T.R.’s sisters-in-law. About four years ago, the last time TR and Raye came to visit Hugh and I, TR asked me out on my patio and asked me if I would give his eulogy when he passed away. I had to think long and hard about this but considered it to be such an honor to be asked to do this that I agreed. I told him it would be hard but I would strive to do my best for him.

TR was a man of many passions. He loved pheasant hunting, he loved dancing with his beloved Baby Raye as he called her, he was a giver, sometimes to his own detriment, and he was an avid Shriner for the crippled and burned children in this world. I remember him going out on hot summer mornings to shake his bucket to collect money for the Scottish Rite Hospital and return with a big smile on his face with a bucket full of money for the children.

As most of you know, one of TR’s lifelong passions was his love of wood. He loved trees of any kind. On road trips to Florida or just around the countryside, he would point out all the types of trees and for what they would be used. I believe that at each home TR ever lived in, he left behind trees for the next generation to enjoy. His son -in-law David made the remark yesterday that TR was probably in Heaven pointing out all the pear trees, the apple trees, and the cherry trees. He loved cherry wood so much that in helping Raye finalize his arrangements yesterday, Judy and Iantha said their Daddy would want fine cherry wood in which to lay and that is exactly what they picked out for him.

When I first met TR, I also met his best friend Sam Coley. Back in the day of racial inequality, I was surprised, oh so pleasantly so, to see that two men of different races could have such a brotherly bond. They shared many good bourbons and good cigars together. When they both grew older and feeble, they talked daily and shared their stories. You know how it goes - it starts out do you remember when we ... and they would talk for hours about their many escapades as we called them. If TR had cigars, Sam had cigars in ample supply. I was with Raye when she called Sam about TR’s passing. He was the only friend of TR’s that Raye could not tell TR had passed away. She could only call his name and that was the only person I had the horrible position of telling for her that TR had passed on from this life.
TR had a lot of stories about growing up in the country. I remember that most of his stories would start with “When I was a lad of a boy.” And then he would proceed to tell us about growing up from humble means here in Cumming to building his dream house, Locke Manor, and many stories in between and after. I knew that when I heard the words, when I was a lad of a boy, we were in for a tale.

TR and I had a little ritual that when we would come to visit him and Raye, we would share a glass of champagne. It just seemed like something so special for us to do. However, he could never get me to try his homemade wine that he loved making so much. When he got too feeble to make the wine himself, many times he cajoled Hugh and Johnny into doing the job for him. We all know he was good at supervising. He was so good at supervising that he even got me to plant tomatoes in the last garden he had - in my pajamas on a Sunday morning and barefoot. He is the only person on this earth who could get me to do that.

When Raye and I were talking the other night, we recalled an incident with TR which always made us laugh and it still had the power to do so on such a sad day. He was making an infomercial for a marketing company which he founded. His longtime hairdresser talked him into curling his hair. When he came back to the office and popped his head into the door and said, with that special grin on his face, what do you think, we almost fell out of our chairs laughing. Well he knew what we thought okay and that was the end of the perm. As you all know, he would try anything once, and that was a one time event.

TR loved all his daughters to a fault. He bragged on their accomplishments and didn’t hesitate to tell you about them. In his latter years, especially when he became pretty much bedridden, he so looked forward to their visits and phone calls. When one called or came by, he was sure to tell you about it.

His grandchildren were no different. Like most grandparents, the fridge was full of pictures of the milestones in their lives. I remember visiting one weekend and it was time for breakfast. Maddie Raye was sent to call PaPa to the table. For her he would get up out of bed even when it wasn’t easy. I think Maddie was about 2 and she took him by the hand and said I’ll help you walk to the kitchen PaPa. And she did. And when she got him to the kitchen, she pulled his chair out for him. I think he felt like a king being seated on his throne for such a little child to do that for him with so much love in her heart. He often told Maddie, that she was God’s little angel who God picked up every night and brought her back to him every morning.

When TR knew his time was drawing near, he and Raye had many talks about the final preparations. The only thing that Raye could not fulfill for him was his wish to be driven around I-285 in a hearse with Last Date by Floyd Cramer playing. There is a little story behind that. When they were dating that song came on the radio and they stopped the car, on 285, and got out and danced to it. I can’t hear that song without thinking about them. So, thinking back to that night 4 years ago at my home, we were all listening to old country music on the radio, which he loved to do, and even though TR was starting to decline, he and his Baby Raye got up in my kitchen and danced. I consider that night to be their Last Date.

But now he is in a better place. Not in pain and suffering any more and with his God in Heaven. He can stand tall again and walk with ease. In his last hour here on earth, Raye said she told him not to walk across that river, but to run. He is finally free of any earthly encumbrances and is where he has wanted to be for a long time.

I’ll never have a glass of champagne again without thinking in my mind, Cheers TR. Rest in peace my old friend.

Gate City continues the Religion and Culture Series with Scottish Heritage in celebration of our upcoming Georgia CHIP event at the Stone Mountain Scottish Games. The famed Address To The Haggis will be performed in the traditional fashion with a bagpiper and escorts. Robert Burns Poetry will be recited by members of the Atlanta Burns Club. The incredibly vast amount of Scottish inventions during the industrial age will also be discussed. Neeps and Tatties will be on hand. Don't worry, there will be plenty of other food besides Haggis.

The event will be part of our regular communication on October 13, 2009. Dinner starts at 6:30PM. Program begins shortly after 7:30PM. Dinner is $7.00 (US).

"Warm-reeking, rich!"Haggis is a dish containing sheep's 'pluck' (heart, liver and lungs), minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, mixed with stock, and traditionally boiled in the animal's stomach for approximately three hours.

Haggis somewhat resembles stuffed intestines (pig intestines otherwise known as chitterlings), sausages and savoury puddings of which it is among the largest types. As the 2001 English edition of the Larousse Gastronomique puts it, "Although its description is not immediately appealing, haggis has an excellent nutty texture and delicious savoury flavour".[1]

Most modern commercial haggis is prepared in a casing rather than an actual stomach. There are also meat-free recipes for vegetarians.

The haggis is a traditional Scottish dish memorialised as the national dish of Scotland by Robert Burns' poem Address to a Haggis in 1787. Haggis is traditionally served with "neeps and tatties" (Scots: swede, yellow turnip or rutabaga and potatoes, boiled and mashed separately) and a "dram" (i.e. a glass of Scotch whisky), especially as the main course of a Burns supper. Lt. Col. Richard P. Turner died peacefully in his sleep on july 26th at his home in Georgia. He will be given full USAF Honors when he is laid to rest on October 14th, 2009. He will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery along side his wife.

Gate City Dismisses Complaint Against Grand Lodge of Georgia

COMPLAINT DISMISSED AGAINST GRAND LODGE OF GEORGIA

A civil Complaint filed against the Grand Lodge of Georgia, F.&A.M., and several
individual Masons has been dismissed today by Gate City Lodge No. 2 and Michael Bjelajac, its Worshipful Master. “We were very sad that we had to bring the Complaint initially,” said Bjelajac. “It was necessitated by the unrestrained actions of a few, which were contrary to the principles of Freemasonry and a prior written statement of our Grand Master.”

On February 25, 2009, J. Edward Jennings, Jr., Grand Master of Masons in Georgia, issued a written statement in response to inquiries from some members about Gate City Lodge No. 2’s having admitted Victor Marshall, a man of African American heritage. In his statement Grand Master Jennings said, unequivocally “. . . [Marshall] is a regular Mason and should be received as such.”

Despite Jennings’ determination two members of other lodges brought Masonic Charges against Bjelajac and Gate City Lodge No. 2 for admitting a “non-white man.” Gate City and Bjelajac, represented by members David J. Llewellyn and C. David Johnston respectively, then brought a Complaint in DeKalb Superior Court against the Grand Lodge of Georgia, those individuals who preferred the Masonic Charges, and the individual who agreed to chair the trial of the Charges. According to Johnston, “The Complaint was justified and resulted in the withdrawal of the Masonic Charges, which were without merit and totaling lacking in due process.”

However, Llewellyn said: “It is now appropriate to dismiss the Complaint in light of a recent Edict issued by the Grand Master, as well as other actions of the Grand Lodge.” In the Edict referred to by Llewellyn, Grand Master Jennings reaffirmed the universal principles of Freemasonry adopted by the Grand Lodge of Georgia, including: “Freemasonry is universal in scope, being a Brotherhood of Man under the Fatherhood of God, and . . . welcomes to its doors and offers its privileges to men of all races, colors and national origins who believe in a Supreme Being, . . .” Speaking on behalf of Gate City Lodge No. 2, including Bjelajac and its members, Llewellyn said: “We trust that the leadership demonstrated by Grand Master Jennings will be followed by all other members of the Grand Lodge of Georgia so that it is clear that any issues involving our basic principles have been resolved once and for all.”

Said Bjelajac: “It is time for all Masons to get back to what we do best – attracting the best men in our communities to improve themselves and work for a better world through our many Masonic organizations and charities.”

Atlanta Cyclorama Painting Donated by Gate City II's George V. Gress

Gress stands by an elephant which was part of a large collection of wild animals which he donated to the Atlanta Zoo in 1889. It was his purchase of those animals which founded the zoo.

The world's largest painting, 42 ft by 358 ft, was donated to the city of Atlanta by Gate City II's George V. Gress in 1898: The famous Cyclorama painting of The Battle of Atlanta. Brother Gress was a native of New York who prospered in the lumber business.

Gate City II put one up for the ages last night. Well known for excellent presentation and delivery of ritual, Tuesday Evening GCII pulled out all of the stops. The lodge was illumined by six new electric candles which produce a flickering, sombre, orange-red glow. Our formally clad brethren hit all the steps with exacting precision. David Herman, Degree Senior Deacon, and Beaux Pettys, Degree Worshipful Master, turned in stunning performances with ranging emotion and deliberate delivery.

Not to be outdone, David Johnston gave a perfect second section of which all the candidates received the lesson. Guest Lecturer extraordinaire, Randy Hazan, Fulton 216, gave a heart felt, precise, and excellent (as usual) Bible Lecture. Dan Genson performed a letter perfect and solemn Apron Lecture. John Guest's Charity Lecture was soft spoken, poignant and impactful. The Northeast Corner Lecture was inimitably thrown down by Beaux Pettys.

Many guests were in attendance. Among them, Norman Evans, from Gainesville, commented that Gate City's performance was the best Entered Apprentice Degree that he'd ever seen. Rusty Newport, Acacia, called it, "Phenomenal."

Wallace Summitts Kilimanjaro:

Senior Warden, Bill Wallace traveled to Africa, on the 5th of July, with achieving the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro as his mission. The expedition left the town of Arusha and the trek began on the 8th of July through the Machame Gate. The Machame trail is the most challenging route on Mt. Kilimanjaro.

The team traveled through 5 different climate zones and a number of camps before finally arriving at the Kosovo high camp. The elevation at this level was above 16,000 feet. After climbing for 9 hours on Sunday the 12th, the team took to their tents at 4:00 p.m. to rest for the summit attempt.

Wake-up was at 11:00 p.m. that evening. After eating and drinking fluids, the team began the difficult final climb at mid-night. Each team member used a headlamp as the only means of light to travel the route while maintaining a slow but steady pace.

Brother Wallace said “the most difficult section was Stella Point. It was like walking up an extremely steep sand dune, with your feet constantly sliding back, with 30 lbs on your shoulders, only two thirds of normal oxygen levels…..and doing this for 8.5 hours. It was truly the stair-master from Hell”.

The entire team successfully achieved the 19,340 foot summit of Mt Kilimanjaro at 8:30 a.m. on the 13th of July. That was only the beginning! The downward journey was equally difficult and tiring and took 4 hours to get back to Kosovo. Afterwards, the team packed up and trekked 5.5 more hours back to the base camp at Mweka.

The journey was successful, the summit was achieved, the pictures provide great memories, but best of all……..friends of Bill Wallace were able to raise significant donations for Doctors without Borders as a result of this goal.Gate City II is an Atlanta Masonic Lodge. Gate City II's summer meetings are as follows: 2nd Tuesday in June, 4th week in July, 2nd week in August. We do not meet on the 4th Tuesday in June, the 2nd Tuesday in July or the 4th Tuesday in August. An easy way to remember meetings during the summer is 2,4,2.

In summary, there will be a meeting on August 11th. There will not be one on August 25th. September resumes our normal schedule. The Grand Master of Masons in Georgia, Edward Jennings, will be present for an official visitation on our first meeting in September.
